How to talk about terrestrial biodiversity with children?

HERE ARE A FEW TIPS FOR TALKING TO CHILDREN ABOUT BIODIVERSITY ON LAND

WOULD YOU LIKE TO RAISE AWARENESS AND EDUCATE CHILDREN ON THE SUBJECT OF TERRESTRIAL BIODIVERSITY? YOUTH CONSERVATION MAKES IT EASY! TAKE A LOOK!

The Youth Conservation platform offers an in-depth exploration of the theme of “Earth’s biodiversity”. Children can work alone or in class on module 1 entitled “Nature on Earth – Discover, understand and take action to save the Earth’s biodiversity“. This module is entirely devoted to discovering and understanding the major mechanisms that make up the beauty of nature on Earth. It also suggests practical ways in which you can take action to preserve it. Additional educational resources are also available to help you learn more about nature. These resources can be found in the “Resources” tab on the site and are freely available to download.

Here is an outline of how you can approach the theme of terrestrial biodiversity:

Part 1: Discovering nature on earth

To get started, you can explain to children what terrestrial biodiversity is, and what its different components are. Module 1 “Nature on Earth” contains videos, animations and illustrations suitable for children aged 7 and over.

Part 2: UNDERSTANDING THE MECHANISMS AND ISSUES RELATING TO TERRESTRIAL BIODIVERSITY

Next, you can look at the issues surrounding terrestrial biodiversity by answering this main question: why is nature important to us in the terrestrial world? Because we all depend on the services that healthy nature is able to provide. These services are known as “ecosystem services”, and there are many of them! This is a wide-ranging subject that will enable you to explore the theme of terrestrial biodiversity in greater depth with your children.

Part 3: TAKING ACTION FOR A HEALTHY PLANET THAT RESPECTS BIODIVERSITY

Finally, the 3rd and last part of the “Nature on Earth” module is devoted to taking action. Faced with the threats to biodiversity, and therefore to humanity, what can we do, individually and collectively, to stop this race towards a 6th mass extinction?

Whatever our country or culture, thinking about the relationships between humans and other species has become a major challenge if we are to meet this challenge.

Transformations must be profound and rapid, and they can take different forms. Some depend on collective decisions and others on us, individually. You will be able to decide with children which actions they can implement from now on to make a difference and save the biodiversity and the future of the planet!
