Environmental Education in Haiti: 250 Students Reached Through the LEKÒL KONBIT Program (Haïti)

An initiative launched on World Environmental Education Day

On January 29, 2026, in the municipality of Petite Rivière de Nippes, Haiti, the Haitian Fund for Sustainable Development (FOHDD) officially launched the operational phase of the LEKÒL KONBIT program, marking the celebration of World Environmental Education Day (January 26).

The initiative aims to strengthen environmental awareness and education among young generations by providing them with the knowledge and skills needed to understand their environment and take meaningful action to protect it.

More than 250 students trained in environmental protection

During this first phase, 250 students from four schools in the municipality participated in a series of awareness and training sessions covering several key themes:

  • the environment and its main components
  • responsible water management
  • the impacts of deforestation
  • solid waste management
  • environmentally responsible behaviors for protecting natural resources

These activities helped students gain practical knowledge while developing the environmental awareness necessary to become agents of change within their communities.

“Knowledge, Awareness, and Action”: the core message of the program

The sessions were led by agronomist François Anslet, Youth Conservation volunteer tutor and active member of FOHDD, who emphasized the importance of understanding how the environment functions, recognizing the impact of individual actions, and committing to environmental protection.

His key message — “Knowledge, Awareness, and Action” — reflects the educational approach of the program: building knowledge, strengthening responsibility, and encouraging concrete action.

Educating responsible environmental citizens from an early age

Through the LEKÒL KONBIT program, FOHDD reaffirms its commitment to educating environmentally responsible citizens from an early age. The initiative also contributes to strengthening community resilience by promoting sustainable behaviors at the local level.

By investing in environmental education for children and youth, the program lays the foundation for communities that are better equipped to protect their natural resources and actively contribute to sustainable development.
