Discover the testimony of Meshack Ogweno from Kenya – Mangrove restoration
Since 2019, the Wildlife and Environment Club of the Ukunda Vocational Training Center Environmental Conservation Club has been leading an inspiring fight for environmental protection in Kenya. This dynamic club, made up of passionate students and their mentors, carries out hands-on initiatives to restore ecosystems and raise community awareness about the importance of biodiversity.
πΏ 3,000 Young Mangroves Planted for a Sustainable Future
On January 4, 2025, a new milestone was reached in mangrove conservation. 15 students from the training center joined forces with 10 members of the Kenya Youth Biodiversity Network and 20 members of Shangani Amani CBO for a day of reforestation. Together, they planted 3,000 young mangrove trees, contributing to a restoration program launched in 2021. Over the past four years, 15,000 trees have already been planted!
Mangroves play a crucial role in coastal ecosystems:
π They protect shorelines from erosion and storms.
π They provide habitat for marine biodiversity, serving as nurseries for many species.
π They capture carbon, helping fight climate change.
π A Broader Commitment to Environmental Protection
Beyond reforestation, these young environmentalists are actively involved in various conservation efforts:
β»οΈ Beach and city clean-ups: collecting plastic waste to reduce pollution.
π’ Marine turtle protection: monitoring nesting sites and educating local communities.
π Plastic recycling: local initiatives to give waste a second life.
Every action, no matter how small, contributes to long-term impact.
