Project “acting for nature conservation”: a look back at the activities held by the NGO Sentina (Burkina Faso)

The initiative “Acting for Nature Conservation – Educating and Empowering Future Eco-Citizens in Africa”, launched some months ago in partnership with the Audemars Watkins Foundation and Play for Nature, is already showing promising results on the ground!

This initiative supports 10 NGOs actively working in Burkina Faso, Benin, Cameroon, Senegal, and Madagascar. Their shared mission: raising youth awareness about environmental preservation through educational and engaging activities.

Numerous initiatives have already been rolled out. Despite the intense heat and heavy rains, children and young people are enthusiastic, school administrators and teachers are highly involved, and the NGOs are more motivated than ever!

Today, we’re highlighting the many activities carried out by the NGO Sentinelle de la Nature in Burkina Faso, where our MOOC Conservation ambassador and Youth Conservation volunteer tutor, Firmin Tape, is an active member.

🌿 Sentinelle de la Nature in Action: Empowering Tomorrow’s Eco-Citizens in Burkina Faso

As part of the regional initiative “Acting for Nature Conservation: Training and Inspiring Future Eco-Citizens in Africa”, the association Sentinelle de la Nature (SENTINA) has been carrying out impactful activities to educate and mobilize young people on environmental issues.

🏫 Environmental Challenge at Lycée Philadelphie in Pô

On April 23, 2025, a major milestone was reached at Lycée Philadelphie, where nine teachers were trained using Youth Conservation’s educational materials. A monitoring jury was also established to oversee the implementation of the Environmental Challenge.

On May 2nd and 3rd, student teams were formed from CP1 to 4th grade, proudly adopting inspiring names like Guardians of Nature, Soldiers of Nature, and Nature’s Princes. The students then took part in awareness sessions on climate change, focusing on its threats, impacts, and practical solutions.

A total of 90 students were educated and engaged in this powerful learning experience.

🌱 Tree Planting Awareness in Fada

On April 30, 2025, SENTINA visited École Primaire Notre Dame de la Paix in Fada to teach students about the essential role of trees in human life. A practical tree planting demonstration complemented the learning experience, allowing students to get involved firsthand.

The session brought together 147 students and 4 teachers, who participated with great enthusiasm and curiosity.

♻️ Waste Management Session in Loumbila

On May 8, 2025, SENTINA continued its environmental outreach at Lycée Privé Évangélique André Brisset in Loumbila by donating waste bins and organizing a sensitization workshop on waste management and recycling. The event brought together a wide range of stakeholders including local government officials, environmental agents, the Parent-Teacher Association, school staff, and notably, 247 students.

This initiative was warmly welcomed as a concrete step towards sustainable waste management practices in the school.

🤝 Backed by Strong Support for Long-Lasting Impact

All these actions were made possible through the technical and financial support of PAPACO/PFN, allowing SENTINA to carry out concrete, educational, and transformative activities on the ground.

💬 In Conclusion…

With more than 480 students and teachers directly impacted in just a few weeks, SENTINA is proving that environmental action starts in schools. By educating, equipping, and engaging youth, the organization is helping build a new generation of responsible and empowered environmental leaders.

🌍 This is just the beginning — more schools to reach, more trees to plant, more waste to recycle, and above all, more young people ready to protect our planet!

Kudos to all the Sentina NGO volunteers for their incredible energy and commitment to empowering young people and protecting the environment! Thanks to the president, Emmanuel Youmanli Lompo, for his trust and committment.
